Turn BMP files into PNG directly in your browser for easier modern use.
BMP (Bitmap) was Microsoft's default image format throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. Windows Paint, many enterprise applications, medical imaging devices, industrial cameras, and older game engines all saved output as BMP by default. The format stores raw pixel data with minimal compression — which made it fast to write on low-powered machines but produces files that are 5–10× larger than equivalent PNGs. A single 1920×1080 screenshot saved as BMP can easily exceed 6 MB. The same image as a PNG typically sits around 800 KB to 1.5 MB. That size difference matters when you're uploading to web servers, sending email attachments, or managing storage on shared drives. BMP also lacks support for transparency. If you need an alpha channel — for logos, UI elements, or layered composites — PNG is the natural destination format.
1. Legacy screenshots from enterprise software. Many corporate tools built on older .NET or Delphi frameworks export reports and dashboards as BMP. If you're preparing those for a web-based reporting portal, you need PNG.
2. Game modding and asset extraction. Older engines — Unreal Engine 1–2 era, many Flash-era titles, and retro game rippers — store textures and sprites as BMP. Converting to PNG gives you lossless quality with transparency support for modern editing tools.
3. Medical and scientific imaging. Microscopes, oscilloscopes, and lab instruments frequently output BMP files because the format's simplicity avoids data loss. Researchers converting these for publication in digital journals or web-based lab notebooks benefit from PNG's smaller footprint.
4. Scanning workflows. Some flatbed scanners and document management systems default to BMP output, especially in archival and government settings. Moving these files to PNG reduces storage costs without sacrificing the pixel-perfect fidelity these environments demand.
5. Email and platform compatibility. Certain CMS platforms, email clients, and messaging apps reject BMP uploads entirely. Converting to PNG is often the fastest path to getting the image where it needs to go.
Both BMP and PNG are lossless formats — meaning no pixel data is discarded during conversion. The image quality is identical. The difference lies in how they store that data.
Compression method: BMP stores pixels either uncompressed or with rudimentary RLE (Run-Length Encoding) compression. PNG uses DEFLATE compression, which is significantly more efficient for most image content. A photographic BMP at 24-bit color depth can shrink by 60–80% when converted to PNG.
Transparency support: BMP technically supports alpha channels in its 32-bit variant, but most software ignores this data. PNG handles transparency natively and universally — every browser, image editor, and operating system recognizes PNG alpha channels.
Color depth: PNG supports 8-bit palettes, 24-bit color, and 48-bit color (with 16-bit per channel). BMP supports similar ranges, but PNG's palette mode makes it excellent for screenshots and graphics with limited colors, sometimes producing even smaller files than the 24-bit version.
Metadata: PNG embeds metadata (EXIF, text chunks, ICC color profiles) more reliably than BMP. If your image carries color profile information — critical for print-accurate work — PNG preserves it across platforms.
Desktop tools like GIMP, IrfanView, XnConvert, and even Paint can save BMP files as PNG. So why use an online converter?
Speed for single files. Opening a desktop application, importing a file, navigating to Export As, choosing PNG settings, and saving takes 30–60 seconds. A browser-based tool does it in under 10 seconds when you already have a browser tab open — which you almost certainly do.
No installation required. On a work machine where you lack admin privileges, on a borrowed laptop, or on a mobile device, installing conversion software isn't an option. Browser tools work everywhere.
Privacy advantage. Pixes processes images entirely within your browser using client-side JavaScript. The BMP file is decoded and re-encoded locally — it is never uploaded to a server. This matters for sensitive content: medical images, internal screenshots, proprietary designs.
Where desktop tools win: batch conversion of hundreds of files, advanced PNG optimization settings (compression level, interlacing, color quantization), and workflows that chain multiple image operations together. For one-off conversions, browser tools are faster and simpler.
Assuming all BMP files are the same. BMP has multiple sub-formats: OS/2 BMP, Windows BMP with BITMAPINFOHEADER, BITMAPV4HEADER, and BITMAPV5HEADER. Some converters choke on older OS/2 variants. Pixes handles all standard BMP sub-formats transparently.
Losing transparency data during conversion. If your BMP is 32-bit with an alpha channel (uncommon but possible), some tools will discard the alpha data and output a PNG with a solid white or black background. Always verify the result if your original had transparent regions.
Color shift with indexed BMPs. 8-bit BMPs use a color palette. If the converter doesn't map the palette correctly, colors can shift slightly. This is rare with modern tools but worth checking if color accuracy matters — for example, in logo reproduction or brand assets.
Confusing file extension with format. Occasionally, a file with a .bmp extension is actually a renamed JPEG or TIFF. A proper converter will detect the actual format by reading the file header rather than trusting the extension.
