Notice the pattern: almost nothing shares a dimension. A 1200×630 Facebook image gets butchered if you use it as-is for an Instagram post. A YouTube thumbnail at 1280×720 won't fit a LinkedIn feed post at 1200×627. Even when you have the right dimensions, platforms behave in ways that ruin well-prepared images:
Facebook's mobile crop. Your 820×312 cover photo looks great on desktop. On mobile, Facebook crops it to roughly 640×360, chopping off the top and bottom edges. Any text or logo placed near those edges vanishes on phones — which is where most Facebook traffic originates.
Instagram's compression. Instagram recompresses every image you upload. PNGs get converted to JPGs. High-contrast images with sharp edges (text overlays, geometric patterns) develop visible artifacts. Exporting as JPG at quality 80-85 from your end often produces better results than uploading a pristine PNG that Instagram's servers will mangle anyway.
LinkedIn's inconsistent cropping. LinkedIn feed images display differently depending on whether they're taller or wider than 1.91:1. Images taller than that ratio get a different treatment in the feed preview. Testing your image in a draft post before publishing saves the embarrassment of a half-cropped banner on your professional profile.
YouTube thumbnail safe zones. The bottom-right corner of every YouTube thumbnail is covered by the video duration badge. Placing critical text or visual elements in that 20% of the frame means they'll be hidden in search results, recommendations, and channel pages.
